Moose is apparently a Burmese mixed with Siamese. He has classic Burmese sable coloring, but big blue Siamese eyes.

Also, good to know, he has 6 front toes on each front foot, and 5 toes on each back foot, for a total of 22. Compared to a normal cat's 18.

"According to Newsday, American runner Meb Keflezighi was the first marathoner to win the New York City Marathon since 1982. Keflezighi, the 2004 Olympic silver medalist, ran it with a time of 2:09:15."

I'm not high, right? This doesn't say that he was the first American runner to win it since 82. It says he is an American, and that he was the first marathoner to win this marathon since 82.

I just picture a route going through lions and spike pits. Or maybe a firing squad near the finish line.

NO ONE WINS THE NYC MARATHON!!!

From this blog, I believe.

The law discriminates against rape victims in a manner which would not be tolerated by victims of any other crime. In the following example, a holdup victim is asked questions similar in form to those usually asked a victim of rape.

DEAR ABBY: For 15 years I was a happily married homemaker with a wonderful husband. "Duncan" and I attended church together, frolicked through the fields, even exterminated rodents together. He was my best friend. It was bliss.

Last year I found out my father had had an affair with Duncan's mother the year I was born, which makes him my half-brother! The news was too much for my husband. He had a fatal heart attack not long after.

What should I put on his gravestone -- "Loving Brother" or "Loving Husband"? -- GRIEVING IN MASSACHUSETTS

DEAR GRIEVING: Neither. How about "He was 'Everything' to me"? That should about cover it.

S'mores Brownies - now with pictures

This is a modified version of these brownies.

Baking porn: two large pictures )

* 1 1/2 cups all purpose flour
* 2 teaspoons baking powder
* 1 teaspoon salt
* 1 cup margarine or butter
* 1 cup and 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
* 3 tablespoons vegetable oil
* 3 tablespoons apple sauce
* 3 large eggs
* 2 egg whites
* 1 1/4 cups dark brown sugar
* 1 cup granulated sugar
* 2 teaspoons vanilla
* 1 generous cup graham cracker, roughly crushed with your hands
* 12 big marshmallows
* 7 diced big marshmallows
* 4 oz milk chocolate chips

Preheat oven to 360°.
Combine the eggs, egg whites, both sugars, vanilla, and melted butter in a large mixing bowl.
Add the cocoa powder, oil, and applesauce and stir until smooth.
Combine the salt, flour, and baking powder separately, and then combine with the wet ingredients.
Fold in diced marshmallows and half of the graham crackers.
Bake for 15 minutes.
Remove brownies from oven, top with remaining graham crackers, chocolate chips, and the whole marshmallows.
Bake for 20 more minutes, or until done.
Let cool for 20 minutes while sitting on your ass eating more chocolate chips.
Cut into squares.

I personally am not going to make these brownies again. It's not really a quality issue so much as taste. I like chewy, fudgy brownies, and these are cake-like. I like my brownies to be a lighter, sweeter chocolate, and these were darker.

Best headline of all time: Police say deadly heist was planned, just not well
Didn't actually read that one...but I'm happy about it. How bad would you feel if you were the criminal right now? I think all crime reporting should insult the intelligence of the offenders.

Why I live in Seattle: Yakima cracking down on thong underwear
Comments range from claiming Yakima now has "fashion police," saying it would institute sharia law (ironic, since I'm sure they would ban Muslims from the county if they could), asking how 16th century Puritans were elected, and calling the Yakima leadership left-wing socialists.

Most surprising news: Russian historian blames Poland for World War II
I knew Poland was behind the whole thing! It was so obvious.

Is there any chance someone would be willing to pick up one of Robert Tracy McKenzie's books and read them? Skim them? And then send him an email saying you read it and you liked/disliked it because it did/didn't say x? Anyone?

I believe that this is his statistical book and this is his more qualitative book.

I'm looking at you, Delmy! It's civil war. Library it. You know you want to.

Just in class today, Krsh asked him about what he's written, and he gave this long depressing speech about writing these two books and realizing that exactly no one had ever read them. He sold 400 copies of the first, and 800 copies of the second, mostly to libraries where people never really check them out.

It made me sad.

He's also in the process of writing a mass history book (we'll see how his colleagues take it...), so whenever that comes out, I'm going to read it, and then buy a copy for Dad and for Delmy and make them read it, too. And then make them email poor McKenzie, so he'll know at least someone read this one.

(While I figure it would mean a lot to him that a former student bothered to read it way, way after grades are in, I think it would mean a lot to him in a different way if someone who had never taken his class picked it up and felt strongly enough to write him about it. And he never has to know I'm encouraging it....mwahahaha.)

"Indecent Liberties - Seattle Campus

This message to members of the University community is being sent in the interest of public safety and in compliance with federal law requiring timely warning notification of crimes committed on or near campus.

The UW Police Department is investigating a reported case of indecent liberties that occurred on January 9, 2009 at 8:30 a.m. in a men's restroom in Odegaard Library. A male victim entered the 3rd floor restroom and noticed the male suspect loitering by the sinks. The suspect started a conversation with the victim describing his own height and weight, and asked the victim how tall he was and how much he weighed. He asked several flirtatious questions while approaching the victim. The victim attempted to leave the area, but the suspect would not move. The suspect again asked the victim how much he weighed, said "let me check," and grabbed the victim in several places. The victim stated that someone entered the restroom, which allowed him to escape. The victim was not injured in the encounter.

The suspect is described as a tall male with a dark complexion, approximately 6'3", with very short hair in a "buzz" cut. He spoke with a strong accent, origin unknown. He was also reportedly carrying a small black 8" toiletry bag."
